With nearly four decades of professional experience spanning government, auditing, academia, technology, entrepreneurship, and executive leadership, Dr. Smith brings a rare combination of financial discipline, technological innovation, and business strategy. She began her professional career with NASA and went on to build experience across the federal government, including the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Air Force Audit Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency, as well as public accounting, higher education, and business ownership.
As a former U.S. Air Force auditor and fraud investigator, Dr. Smith developed deep expertise in identifying financial irregularities, operational weaknesses, control failures, and financial risk. Her work contributed to identifying more than $1.2 billion in fraud, financial exposure, and potential losses, experience that continues to shape her approach to protecting revenue, strengthening organizations, and designing systems built for accountability.
Today, she applies that same audit discipline to AI-powered business growth. A Certified Artificial Intelligence Consultant (CAIC), Dr. Smith specializes in intelligent automation, revenue intelligence, AI consulting, business process transformation, CRM ecosystems, marketing accountability, and scalable digital infrastructure. Since 2020, she has created and directed the development of more than 1,000 intelligent automations designed to eliminate repetitive work, strengthen controls, improve customer experiences, and help organizations operate with greater accuracy, efficiency, and visibility.
Dr. Smith is a nationally recognized accounting educator, researcher, and academic leader. She currently serves as President of the Accounting Information Systems Section of the American Accounting Association and is a Full Professor of Accounting at Florida International University. She previously served as President of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy and is the creator of FIU’s Accounting Bridge Program. Her research has appeared in leading scholarly journals, including Decision Sciences, The Accounting Review, and the International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, with her work also featured in The Wall Street Journal.

Her professional journey began at NASA Langley Research Center, where she worked with early digital systems and helped teams adapt technology to real operational demands. That experience established a long-standing focus on using technology not simply to increase speed, but to improve judgment, reliability, transparency, and responsible execution.
Her career expanded across federal government, defense, national security, auditing, public accounting, academia, entrepreneurship, and consulting. These experiences provided an uncommon perspective on how organizations function when financial controls, governance structures, group processes, technology, and human decision-making must work together.
In 2009, Dr. Smith secured her first major consulting engagement with AAJ Technologies, a government contracting firm operating in highly regulated, high-stakes environments. She developed the firm’s enterprise consulting framework and led a comprehensive reorganization of core operational systems, aligning strategy, processes, controls, accountability, and execution. During this period, AAJ Technologies received the Supplier of the Year Class II Award at the 34th Annual Awards Gala hosted by the Florida Business Council.
This engagement reinforced an approach that has continued throughout her career: designing systems that strengthen credibility, improve organizational discipline, reinforce governance, and create the infrastructure required for long-term growth.
Dr. Smith later became the first Black Full Professor in the College of Business at Florida International University while continuing to advise organizations and physician-led medical practices across Florida. She currently serves as President of the Accounting Information Systems Section of the American Accounting Association and previously served as President of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy.
Research is also central to her approach. As a published scholar, Dr. Smith has conducted research examining accounting, auditing, information systems, organizational behavior, fraud, governance, and technology-related decision-making. Her scholarship has appeared in leading academic journals, including The Accounting Review, Decision Sciences, and the International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, and her research has been featured in The Wall Street Journal.
